“If I Could Sing.” An Underrated Masterpiece

Gerald Lofton, Editor-in-Chief

“If I Could Sing” By  Qwel and Maker, A rap duo that released the underrated gem back in 2013 with the album Beautiful Raw. The song’s structure sounds like they’re being spoken to someone precious to them and makes it feel incredibly personal with the chorus repeating “…If I could sing,I would sing your song.. And I would fight the world I tell em’ bring it on.” The song is spoken in a soft tone outside of the chorus to make it sound comforting and in the chorus it ramps up with a louder, more confident voice.

Going into the later half of the song it becomes more fast paced. It  sounds as if Qwel is becoming frustrated and on the brink of tears. The instruments in the background begin to fade as the lyrics becomes softer and more somber or almost as piano slows almost to halt and it repeats part of the chorus “If I could sing”

The lyrics that could stand out as well is “..And only foolishness bruises are gone, She lays in lavender laughs in the songs, I’ll be your sunny day although my souls a storm.” It creates this impact of how important it is to protect bonds that make us human because realizing what we love about someone and what we’ll do for them is powerful.
